Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parenting is joyful & challenging
If your child’s tantrums feel overwhelming, listening seems like a daily battle, or you’re worried about behavior at home or school, you’re not alone. Many parents feel unsure of what to do next, and that’s where Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) can help.

PCIT is a proven, hands-on approach designed for young children (typically ages 2–7) and their caregivers. Instead of only talking about strategies, PCIT gives you real-time coaching and support while you interact with your child. Your therapist will guide you through effective tools—like using praise, play, and clear instructions—to help your child feel connected and supported while improving behavior.

Many families see meaningful changes:
-
More cooperation and listening
-
Fewer tantrums and power struggles
-
A stronger, more positive parent-child relationship
How Does PCIT Work?
PCIT involves two main phases:
-
Child-Directed Interaction (CDI): Caregivers focus on building warmth and security through positive attention, reflective listening, and play-based interaction.
-
Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI): Caregivers are coached on delivering clear, consistent commands and consequences to increase compliance and reduce problem behaviors.

What makes PCIT unique is the live coaching format. The therapist observes caregiver-child interactions and provides in-the-moment guidance, often via a small earpiece or discreet cues. This allows parents to practice skills and receive feedback instantly, making learning more effective.

Research shows PCIT significantly decreases behavior problems, improves family relationships, and helps parents feel more confident in managing challenges.
What to Expect When You Start
PCIT is about more than changing behavior—it’s about helping your child feel understood, strengthening your relationship, and building confidence as a parent.
